A Punjabi-origin man has been arrested in California for his wife Jasmine Aujla Gill’s murder after her burned remains were identified in El Dorado County.
Sacramento (US) A man of Punjabi origin has been arrested in California on a murder charge after the burned remains of his missing wife, Jasmine Aujla Gill, were identified in El Dorado County, according to the Sacramento County Sheriff’s Office.
Gurinder Gill was arrested on October 14 following an investigation into the disappearance and death of Jasmine, who was last seen at the couple’s Sacramento residence on September 30.
Jasmine’s cousin reported her missing on October 4, four days after authorities discovered burned human remains in El Dorado County. The remains were subsequently identified as those of Jasmine Gill.
During the initial investigation, Gurinder allegedly told detectives that officers from the US Immigration and Customs Enforcement (ICE) agency had taken his wife into custody while she was checking the mail outside their residence.
However, investigators contacted ICE, which confirmed that no enforcement activity had taken place at the address, the sheriff’s office said.
As the investigation progressed, detectives found inconsistencies in Gurinder’s statements about his wife’s disappearance. They also learned that the couple was involved in ongoing divorce proceedings and a child custody dispute.
Based on the findings, homicide detectives obtained an arrest warrant for Gurinder on a murder charge. He was subsequently located and arrested. Investigators also executed search warrants at two residences associated with him.
Gurinder was booked into the Sacramento County Main Jail and was being held without bail, according to the sheriff’s office.
The investigation into Jasmine’s death is ongoing.
